Sale grew quickly after the railway arrived in 1849, and Victorian terraces, semi-detached houses and larger villas from those years still stand across the town, with many of the bigger houses now converted into flats. Roofs of that age are typically slate, with brick chimney stacks and lead flashing that have had well over a hundred years of weather.
A large share of the town is semi-detached housing from the 1930s, and estates were added in Ashton upon Mersey and on the east side of Sale in the 1970s. Tiled roofs with mortar-bedded ridges, flat roofs on extensions and garages, and uPVC roofline are all part of the mix. We work on all of them.
We are based at 43a School Road in Sale, so Ashton upon Mersey, Brooklands, Sale Moor and Timperley are all a short drive.

Housing in Sale runs from Victorian terraces and villas to streets of 1930s semi-detached houses and estates from the 1970s, and each kind of building has its own typical roof faults. These are the jobs our roofers are called out to most across Sale, Ashton upon Mersey, Brooklands and Sale Moor.
The terraces, semis and villas built in Sale after the railway came in 1849 were roofed in slate. Slate lasts longer than the iron nails that hold it, so on a roof of that age the fixings corrode and slates drop out of position or blow off in high wind. In most cases a roofer can re-secure them or fit matching slates without stripping the roof. See our slate roofing.
The Victorian houses in Sale were built with brick chimney stacks, and plenty of them have not had a fire lit beneath them for years. A stack takes the weather from every side, so the pointing washes out and the lead flashing at its base cracks or lifts away from the brickwork. A damp mark on the chimney breast, or a stained ceiling beside it, is usually the first thing you notice. See our chimney repairs and lead flashing repairs.
The 1930s semi-detached houses that fill so many streets in Sale mostly have tiled roofs, with the ridge tiles and roof edges bedded in sand and cement. Decades of frost and rain crumble that mortar until it drops out, leaving ridge tiles loose and the verges open to wind-driven rain. See our ridge tile repairs and dry verge systems.
Many of the Victorian houses and 1930s semis in Sale have a bay window with a small roof of its own, covered in lead, felt or tile. Once that covering cracks, or the joint where it meets the house wall opens, water gets in and shows as a stain on the wall or ceiling directly above the window. See our bay window roof repairs.
Extensions, dormers and garages across Sale and Ashton upon Mersey are often covered in felt, which eventually blisters, splits and holds standing water. One fault on an otherwise sound roof can be patched, but when the whole surface is failing a new covering is the better-value job. See our flat roofing.
Moss washing off the roof and leaves from street and garden trees block gutters quickly, and on a terrace or a pair of semis one blocked run can spill onto next door as well. The overflow keeps the fascia board behind the gutter wet until the timber softens and the brackets work loose. See our gutter repairs and gutter cleaning.
